Reporting field note

Podcast audience analytics across platforms.

A centralized audience view needs consistent periods, clear platform labels and honest coverage. Putting the numbers together does not make them the same measurement.

What podcast audience analytics can tell you

Podcast audience analytics describes who a show reaches and how that audience consumes its content, using the fields each source makes available. Geography, age, gender, device mix and engagement trends answer different questions from campaign delivery or attributed conversions.

An agency planning a campaign needs to know whether a show's audience fits the brief. A publisher reviewing growth needs to understand which shows and platforms are changing. Both need to see where the figures came from, what period they cover and where coverage ends.

Map the available sources first

Start with the accounts the client can authorize: hosting analytics, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube. Record the fields available in each account and export. Access to one platform does not establish access to every demographic or retention measure.

  • Hosting: episode downloads and the available geography, app or device breakdowns.
  • Apple Podcasts and Spotify: platform-native consumption, engagement and audience fields where available.
  • YouTube: video performance, watch time, retention and available audience breakdowns.
  • Campaign sources: delivery and response measures, kept in their own reporting context.

The IAB Tech Lab podcast measurement guidelines provide a reference for podcast measurement terminology. They do not make every platform metric equivalent or make a reporting dashboard independently certified.

A worked example: compare equivalent windows

Suppose an agency wants to compare 2 shows for a sponsor shortlist. The following figures are fictional and illustrate a reporting method, rather than a customer result.

Fictional example: first 7 days after each episode release
MeasureShow AShow BInterpretation
Hosting downloads12,0009,000Compare downloads using the same episode-age window and source rules.
YouTube views4,0006,000Show B has more video views in this window. These are not additional unique podcast listeners.
Source-reported audience geographyUS: 60%US: 75%Check which platform population and period each percentage covers.
Age breakdownUnavailableAvailable for one platformDo not infer Show A's demographics or generalize one platform's profile to every listener.

Show A's 12,000 downloads plus 4,000 video views do not establish 16,000 unique people. The same person may consume on multiple platforms, while downloads and views count different events. A combined activity total needs an explicit definition; a unique audience claim needs a defensible deduplication method.

Keep the reporting context beside every figure

  • Source platform and account or show mapping
  • Metric name and provider definition
  • Reporting window, timezone and episode age
  • Latest successful source refresh and any settling period
  • Coverage limits, missing fields and method changes
  • Named owner for reviewing exceptions

A percentage without its population is easy to misread. A demographic distribution from one platform should remain labeled as that platform's audience. When a source changes its definition or revises a period, annotate the change before interpreting it as growth.

What belongs in a centralized audience dashboard

A useful podcast analytics dashboard lets the team select a show and period, inspect platform-specific performance, review available audience breakdowns and see coverage gaps. It preserves separate consumption, audience and campaign measures while making comparison easier.

Podrelay can maintain that view within reporting operations, using authorized connections or approved exports. The capability reference explains the source model. Collection and reporting depend on the client's access and the fields each source actually provides.

Check the interpretation before client delivery

Ask whether each comparison uses the same period and episode age, whether missing fields are visible and whether any total implies unique people without supporting measurement. Then check that the source and population beside each audience claim match the report's wording.

A smaller set of sourced, comparable figures gives the account team a stronger basis for a recommendation than a larger total nobody can explain.
